Gut Bacteria Help Reduce Aspergers

A mother just discovered that the aspergers syndrome is linked to gut bacteria. It means that the stomach and digestive factors may affect the behavioral changes. It may further mean that by dealing with stomach and gut area issues you can deal with autism and aspergers. The ideology is not new but it was only a consideration. A lot of evidences have been collected in this regard which are going to prove that the autism and aspergers is somewhere linked to gut, stomach and digestion system.

The discovery started with the statement of a mother named Claire Parkinson residing in London (Lewisham, South-East). She has three children out of which her son was constantly suffering from digestive problems of stomach pain and flatulence. In spite of treatment he could not get rid of this trouble and was in this condition from his early childhood. Now he was 11 years old. He was also diagnosed as expected sufferer of aspergers syndrome due to his improper and rude behavior trends. Once he was taken out from the school for the same reason.

One day the mother selected a dietary supplement while she was searching on the internet. The supplement was marketed with the claim that it contained probiotic bacteria. The dietary supplement showed its affect and the boy got well in digestion. The intensity of the stomach ache decreased and digestion disorders reduced to a noticeable level. The wonderful fact was that there was a definite change in his behavior and his aspergers symptoms reduced unexpectedly. The mother noticed a great development in his mode, concentration and way of dealing. The boy started positive activities and joined the school where he is showing a peaceful and cool attitude. The mother narrated the whole story to the newspapers.

Before moving forward, two things need definitions:

What is aspergers? – Aspergers syndrome is a kind of autism. This syndrome mostly catches the children and makes it hard for them to communicate in proper manner. The children with aspergers cannot speak well and find it tough to deal with their relatives in different situations. Their imagination power gets weak and they have recurring types of interests. They get persistent and rude manners.

What is Probiotic Bacteria? – These are the bacteria which are considered to help in digestion process. They are assumed to stay in the gut area and deal with some digestive issues. Although not proved well but they are said to prevent from diarrhea and allergies from food.

The statement of Claire is taken as a turn in the treatment of aspergers and autism. It is the proof in this regard but the concept is not new. The connection between the gut bacteria and the brain functions has already been indicated many times. The researches and studies have been indicating that the gut bacteria affect the mental trends, anxiety, behavior and so the aspergers and autism. But the matter is perhaps taking a definite turn to the positivity.

Following 5 researches are showing that Claire is exactly right.

First proof is the research of Arizona University’s Bio-design Institute. The institute conducted a study on the children. The researchers compared the amount of gut microbes in the children with aspergers syndrome or autism with those without it. It was found that the gut bacteria have lesser quantity in the children with the autism as compared to others with no autism. The scientists also narrated that the first source of gut bacteria is the mother. The baby gets gut microbes initially from the mother’s birth channel. The stressed mothers transmit fewer gut bacteria than the mothers without stress.

Second Evidence is the statement of Dr Kirsten Tillisch. He is an associate professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles and is a busy practitioner. He observed that in most cases the patients feel no autism until they got a trouble in their gut region. He states that according to his experience the gut and the brain are always interlinked.

The Third is the report of the reliable journal PLOS One. Although the report showed no medical proof but suggestions are made on strong bases. The writer analyzed that western type of diets may harm beneficial gut bacteria and consequently call aspergers and autism. Rich in intense carbohydrate compounds, these diets may be trouble for beneficial gut microbes and helper of harmful bacteria. There is possibility of aspergers syndrome and autism if the western diets are used on continuous basis and in excessive quantity.

The fourth evidence came in the report of Dr Emeran Mayer. He is appointed at the University of California in Los Angeles as a professor of medicine and psychiatry. He examined the MRI images of 60 people. He pointed out that the specific regions of brains showed specific differences with specific types of bacteria in the gut region. There was a clear link between the kinds of gut microbes and inter-brain structures.

Another report was published by him in the journal Gastroenterology in June 2013 edition. He studied a group of women for the anxiety level. He supplied probiotics to one group while the second group was given placebo or no treatment. The first group with the probiotics supply showed lesser levels of anxiety. The fact indicates the link between aspergers syndrome and digestion system.

And the fifth and final is the study of Professor Stephen Collins of McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. He experimented on the mice and exchanged the gut bacteria with one another. He selected two groups of mice. One with the higher anxiety level and second had no anxiety. He transmitted the gut bacteria of one groups to the second group and in a further experiment reversed the process. He found that the anxiety level was transmitting with the transmission of gut microbes.

The observation of Claire and the results of above said studies prove that there is a strong link between the aspergers and gut area microbes. So the assumption that the aspergers and autism are connected to the intestinal, stomach and whole gut area issues. It may be clearly assumed that well working digestion system may keep us away from aspergers and autism. While dealing with aspergers syndrome, we should also consider digestion system. So the better digestion means less aspergers and autism.
