When it comes to pregnancy and conception, there is no way to guarantee the gender of the resulting baby. The sex depends entirely on whether the egg was fertilized by a sperm carrying X or Y chromosomes. This means that whether you end up with a son or daughter is largely down to the father’s genetics, and if there is a history of male family members fathering boys or girls.
However, this does not mean that conceiving a girl is entirely a lottery. There are several notable scientific studies into gender which suggest that certain dietary habits may influence the outcome. Although the gender is not assured, you can tip the odds in favor of having a daughter.
Studies Into Calcium And Magnesium
One of the more recent findings relating to diet and gender selection suggests that a maternal diet rich in green vegetables is more likely to lead to a girl. This study was conducted on 182 couples who already had one or more sons, and who were keen to add a daughter to their brood.
After following a strict diet plan devised by the scientists, four out of five mothers went on to give birth to a baby girl. Although researchers cannot fully explain the reasons behind this, it is theorized that a diet rich in magnesium and calcium may alter the cervical mucus to make it more favorable to X carrying sperm.
Other calcium and magnesium rich foods which may influence the gender of a baby include dairy products, nuts and seeds. Some anecdotal evidence suggests that brazil nuts are particularly beneficial, since they also contain oleic acid. This raises the pH of the vaginal environment, which may make it less hospitable to Y sperm and therefore increases the odds that a X sperm will be successful in fertilizing the egg.
Conversely, studies by Dutch scientists have found that diets rich in potassium and sodium can raise the chances of a son. Therefore, mothers desiring a girl may wish to reduce their intake of starchy and processed foods whilst trying to conceive.
Low Calorie Diets Favor Girls
Another finding which has been recreated over numerous studies is the fact that women who have higher calorie intakes conceive more boys, whereas a low calorie diet is more likely to lead to a girl. It has been conclusively shown that women who eat breakfast daily, for example, are around twenty percent more likely to have sons. Part of the reason for this may be that habitually eating breakfast correlates with a higher overall calorie intake.
Women who eat high calorie diets produce more glucose. Although the biological mechanisms behind conception, gender and glucose levels are not well understood, it does seem that high glucose levels increase the survival likelihood of a male fetus. As a consequence of this, some scientists believe that humans have evolved to favor conception of girls when food is scarce (and calorie intake is low), since a lack of glucose is not so detrimental to smaller, female fetuses.
Drastic restriction of calories is not advisable without medical sanction. However, the studies do highlight the fact that it may be wise to avoid over indulgence if you crave a daughter. Following this advice may be more likely to result in the birth of a girl when combined with the findings that magnesium and calcium rich diets give X carrying sperm an advantage.
