Food Intolerances Can Keep You From Losing Weight And Fat

A food intolerance is a sensitivity that cause digestive symptoms like bloating and gas, along with improper digestion and nutrient absorption.  And when you can’t properly digest your food, it can then cause problems with losing weight and fat, because of increased body inflammation.

However, since you likely don’t realize that you have any food intolerances, this becomes very confusing:

  • You are eating a high protein diet of lean protein sources
  • You are limiting the majority of your carbohydrate intake to those that are slower digesting
  • You are avoiding processed foods, bad fats, and sugar

But even with a workout program that includes high intensity exercise – you continue to struggle to lose any more weight or fat.

Food Intolerances Can Come From Healthy Foods

And here is what is so confusing:

  • You feel certain you are doing all the right things to burn fat
  • You know you are avoiding the ‘bad’ foods
  • But don’t realize that food intolerances and digestion problems can actually come from healthy foods

For instance, eggs and dairy products like cottage cheese or low sugar Greek yogurt, and whey protein powder are all regarded as high quality protein sources.  But they are also foods that many people have an intolerance to, because they have problems digesting the lactose in them.

Intolerance To Artificial Sweeteners

And besides possibly having an intolerance to foods you believe are health, artificial sweeteners like sucralose and sorbitol can ‘destroy’ your stomach – and many of the whey protein powders are sweetened with sucralose.

I had a period of time where I was drinking a lot of powerade zero, when I wanted something with flavor instead of water, and was also using it in smoothies – and my second favorite supplement besides omega-3 DHA became GasX  😛

I also gained a little weight, when I was still trying to lose, and had no increase in calories or change in my workouts.  It turned out that powerade zero is sweetened with sucralose, and that was causing me all my problems – when I cut it out, the stomach aches and gas went away and I lost 10 pounds.

Digestive Enzyme Deficiencies

In order to properly digest foods, we need to be able to produce the necessary digestive enzymes.  But as the result of many factors like age, preserved and processed foods, and bad dietary habits, we lose the ability to make these needed enzymes – and it is these deficiencies that lead to the food intolerances and digestion issues that cause increased inflammation and problems with losing weight.

I don’t eat wheat, pasta or bread, so the gluten issue isn’t a problem I have.  Eggs don’t bother me, but I do have problems with cottage cheese, yogurt, and some whey protein powders – things that have helped:

  • Lactaid makes a lactose free cottage cheese, which is what I get
  • Greek yogurt that is no-fat and low sugar is a lot better than ‘regular’ yogurt
  • High quality whey protein blends that also have a digestive enzyme
  • And take a digestive enzyme supplement
