Diarrhea in the babies is very common and almost takes place instead of all kinds of preventions. When the baby starts passing stools more than usual we call it diarrhea. The normal stool passing rate is somewhat different for different babies but 2 to 3 times is a routine. As many times the baby passes stool more than this routine, we count it severity of diarrhea. The severity of diarrhea is directly proportional to the frequency of diarrhea. Diarrhea in the babies is not always risky, but if not stopped or treated soon, may be a health and even a life risk. The main and the dangerous factor of diarrhea is dehydration. In the adults the dehydration does not affect in the earlier stages due to sufficient storage of water in the body. As the babies cannot store a lot of water, they are always at more risk of dehydration in case they get diarrhea. As the looseness and frequency of the stool gets more, the risk of dehydration gets more horrible. If you have a baby with diarrhea, you can observe the dehydration factor from his urination and baby color. The dehydrated baby cannot urinate at the proper timings due to lack of water. A normal child should urinate at least within 7 hours. Next signs are yellowish paled color and dried mouth. Always remember that diarrhea is a trouble and dehydration is a risk. Whenever we treat a baby fro diarrhea, we at first deal with the dehydration. However the long duration of diarrhea is also a trouble.
In the babies, the major cause of the diarrhea is eating something wrong. Food allergy, viral infections, bacteria and parasites all may cause diarrhea in the babies. Any intake containing any of these factors can cause diarrhea in your child.
How Long Does Diarrhea Last In Babies?
The duration of the diarrhea depends upon the kind of diarrhea. In most cases it is due to some viral infection and may go from few days to 15 days. In most cases in the infants the treatment hardly succeeds to much reduce the diarrhea duration. The end day of the diarrhea depends upon what kind of infection your baby have and what are you feeding. During diarrhea increase the liquid intakes of the child and stop the solids for some time. If you are to concentrate on treatment, then concentrate on escaping dehydration of baby. Increased fluids in the diet will fulfill the deficiency of water created by the extra water loss through recurrent loose stools. Besides the increased fluids you will have to make some changes in the diet of the baby. If you see that stool frequency is leaving its limits, add some extra milk, soft soups and direct water if liked by the baby. Some doctors deny recommending fruit juices and boiled skim milk as they are supposed to produce more trouble. If you have already started solid diets, you can increase the banana, pounded potatoes, cereals and rice. If you have gone through a long treatment of diarrhea for your baby and doctor has stopped solids, don’t hurry back to start solids again.
If the duration of diarrhea extends to weeks, then doctors may recommend oral glucose-electrolyte solutions in the diet. As we already said that there is no proper antibiotic and exact medicinal treatment for diarrhea in babies, so the doctors always tend to prescribe some anti allergic and just caring medicines. You are take care of your baby and not let him/her dehydrated. If you find all your cares and preventions proving zero, always hurry to call your doctor or child specialist.
