What is HPV?

HPV is the abbreviation of Human papilloma virus. It is the group of viruses that consists of more than 100 types of viruses. These are a kind of STD (Sexually transmitted disease). These viruses cause infections and warts in the different parts of the human body. Different types of hpv viruses attack different areas. Mostly this virus attacks the moist membranes, at the linings of human body such as anus and cervix. There are more than 40 types of HPVs that affect the genital areas. However theses viruses also cause infections in the nose, throat and mouth too. Sometimes the warts on hands and face also appear. Commonly the HPV infections don’t reach the cancerous stage, but the genital infections may lead to cancer. The hpv infection in the uterus, cervix and the inner passage of the vagina may often lead to cancer.

Symptoms

The major symptoms of the hpv disease are warts. These warts appear in different shapes. The shape and the nature of the warts depend upon the type of hpv virus causing warts. These warts are of four types.

1. Ordinary Warts – These warts are common warts. These appear as bumps that are raised or of rough nature. Fingers, hands and the area around fingernails are favorite spots of these warts. These are not dangerous and painful. However sometimes they get inflamed and soared in case of injury and bleeding.

2. Genital Warts – These warts seem like flat cut, scratch or a projection. These may be stem like, cauliflower shaped or protrusion. In men the most attack is on the penis. It is also found on the anus or scrotum. In the women the warts generally appear on the cervix or in the vagina. They may also appear on vulva or close to anus. Genital warts do appear but don’t cause a pain or itching if they are not disturbed.

3. Flat warts – These are the warts that appear on the body parts except the genital parts. These usually appear on the face, neck and wrists of the patient. Their shape is like an ejected particle. They have somewhat dense color as compared to your original skin color. They commonly attack the human in earlier age stages. Children, teen agers and young people are the most prey of these warts. They create the main problem when they appear on the joints like elbows and knees. They may disturb the joints and might be disturbed by the movements and produce discomfort.

4. Plantar Warts – These appear commonly on the heels and feet. These parts of the body face a lot of pressure so the warts cause pain and itching. They are of gritty and hard shape and are common in adults.

Risks and Dangers

These infections are very common and increasing with time. The surveys show that 75% people get hpv infections at some stage of the life. The problem is that the common people don’t know that they have hpv disease. The human body has a good resistance against hpv. It can defeat it and generally it does not let the disease to occur.

In most cases the hpv infection remains for less than 1 year and then vanishes out without any harm. However in all cases it is not the same. Sometimes the symptoms of the hpv do disappear but the disease stays still there. It may appear at any stage of life even after many years. During this duration its detection is difficult. For the same reason, as the time goes, it is very difficult to detect the source where the hpv virus came from and the real start time of the disease.

In general circumstances the hpv infections do not have harmful effects. At the inferior level it is not hazardous and fatal. These are known as low-risk hpv.

But sometimes hpv virus causes cell changes. This type of hpv is very dangerous and may lead straight to cancer. This may be a throat cancer, cervical cancer or any other definite genital cancer. If the warts on any part of the body are causing pain or disturbance, they should be immediately diagnosed and treated by a doctor.
