The Graves disease, treatment methods

The Graves disease is a hypertrophy of the thyroid gland. If this develops a lot, it presses on the organs at the level of the throat and thus causes disorders of the blood circulation, or regarding swallowing and breathing. The Basedow-Graves disease or simply the Graves disease represents a hyperfunctional disease of the thyroid gland. This disease appears frequently in adults, with the biggest probability in the case of those aged between 30 and 40. Knowing the main symptoms of the Graves disease, the person will have to ask for help from a medic in order to receive a proper diagnosis and treatment. The symptoms include: weight loss even if alimentation is the same, states of nervousness, tiredness, insomnia, excess sweating. Also, one may experience hand trembling, palpitations and disorders of the cardiac rhythm, while the thyroid gland may seem enlarged when touching it; the eyeballs seem prominent, so that they eyes seem to exit the orbits a little.

In the conventional and traditional medicine, there are more treatment methods for this disease. The treatment recommended by the medic, based on medicines, will help reduce the amount of thyroid hormones that the thyroid gland produces. Thus, through the well established doses of radioactive iodine, the number of cells that produce thyroid hormones will be reduced. The medic should always establish the doses for each patient, according to the size of the thyroid and its level of activity. Thus, he will make an echography of the patient and a physical examination. Also, special tests involve the use of some substances (which do not affect the organs and tissues around the thyroid gland) in order to establish its level of activity when producing thyroid hormones.

Radioactive iodine will be given to the patient in its liquid form or in a capsule, so that its reaches the organism; a part of it is accumulated in the thyroid, while the rest is eliminated through the urine.

After using the treatment, the substance will be eliminated fast from the body with the help of a large liquid intake. In some people, the gland can get inflamed due to the radioactive iodine and a pain sensation will appear, which involves administering paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen in order to eliminate these symptoms. These negative states can miss in some cases, all depending on any patient. What is certain is that the treatment makes its effect felt and the secretion of the thyroid hormones drops in the following weeks. In some people, a single dose of radioactive iodine is enough to correct this disease; after 12 more weeks, the second dose is applied. Both during treatment and after it gives the first effects and it is stopped, the patient needs to see a doctor constantly.

Another treatment for the Graves disease is the one based on propylthiouracil and metimazol. These special medicines have the desired effects on the thyroid gland, helping reduce the production of thyroid hormones. Their effect does not appear immediately, but only after a few months, as the thyroid has stored enough hormones in order to maintain their increased levels.
In order to ameliorate some symptoms that appear in the case of this disease, respectively for combating shaking and palpitations, the medic will prescribe a treatment based in beta blockers, which are used to treat other diseases as well, such as heart diseases and arterial hypertension. Such medicines cannot be used by the people who suffer from cardiac diseases or asthma.
The surgical method is the most indicated in the case of the Graves disease. With its help, a part of the thyroid gland is eliminated. The procedure is not dangerous, but on the contrary, it is quite simple and sure, being knows as subtotal thyroidectomy.
Alternative medicine has a few treatment methods that help reduce the amount of thyroid hormones and the decrease of intensity of the symptoms of the Graves disease.

Those who feel their eyes dry can use artificial tears that can be found in pharmacies, even without medical prescription. During the night, one can apply compresses on the eyelids which do not close completely, in order to maintain the cornea humid.
In the treatment period and not only, the eyes should be protected by the sun and wind with dark-lens glasses.

Physical exercises for a quarter of an hour per day helps maintain a state of good health in general, also maintaining the balance of the thyroid gland. Also, the “candle” position (which is practiced in Yoga) helps ameliorate the function of this gland. Lay on your back, raise your legs until the hips no longer touch the ground (during this time you should support them with the hands), while the legs are stretched in a vertical position.

The diet based in peanuts, soy, spinach, peaches, cabbage, radishes and the vitamin B complex has a good effect for treating this disease, helping inhibit the production of thyroid hormones. Vitamin A is also very good. Also, alkaline medicines help balance the hormones: dry beans, maize, wheat, squashes, hazelnuts, lemon, apples, watermelons and bananas.

Sweet burdock root also helps treat Graves disease. Mix the burdock root with common agrimony root (1:1 proportion), chop them and use a teaspoon of powder every day in the morning, at noon and in the evening, before eating.

For a year, use a treatment with linden tree and harvest mite buds.

The parsley leaves infusion is also very good, so one should have 2 glasses a day. Half a glass of parsley juice a day is just as effective. Also, one can make a parsley root decoct: for 15-20 minutes, boil 50 g root in one liter of hot water; filter it and sweeten it with a little honey.

  • Each morning, before eating, have half a glass of celery juice. Also, 2 cups of celery decoct a day are just as effective for treating this disease.
  • Crushed or chopped white onion is put in a gauze bag and applied on the skin in the area of the thyroid gland.
  • In the morning and the evening, have a cup of harvest mite or goosefoot tea.
  • Oat helps restore and normalize the activity of the thyroid gland. Add a teaspoon of powdered oat in a cup of hot water, let it infuse for 10 minutes, filter it through a humid cotton fabric and then dry it and apply it on the skin, in the area of the neck, next to the thyroid. Then make a break for a week and repeat the process. You can also use the oat decoct – add a kilogram of powdered oat in one liter of hot water and let it rest for 30 minutes. Drink it every day, but in well established doses so as not to exaggerate. It is good to consult a specialist before starting any type of treatment.
  • For half a year, you can have a treatment with a macerate made from mixed medicinal plants (2 spoons common agrimony and 2 spoons of rose of Sharon).
  • Stress can affect the patients predisposed to this disease or who suffer from it in the incipient phase.
  • Sunbaths are not indicated while having the Graves disease.

The Graves disease is hereditary, being transmitted on the feminine line, from one generation to another. People should treat their viral infections in time, have a balanced lifestyle and control and maintain the state of health of their organism in order to prevent the Basedow-Graves disease.
